The dye-sensitized solar cell was invented at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne by Michael Grätzel, professor at the Technical University. The cell converts light to electricity by a process very similar to photosynthesis. In contrast to conventional solar cells, the Grätzel Cell is a photochemical cell. Our study of Grätzel Cells forms part of a wider educational project concerning energy problems. We looked at these problems from the point of view of energy sources, particularly renewable energy sources, and also from the point of view of social involvement and responsibility. We wanted to teach the students, as future citizens, how to make informed choices in their daily lives.
